Even fender benders can cause serious trouble for drunk drivers
Most people have had at least one minor accident in their lives. You may have dinged someone’s car in a parking lot or had some other type of accident happen that you were able to walk away from without too many problems.
For drunk drivers, the possibility of an accident is much more likely. Drunk drivers are erratic and slow to respond to immediate situations. Those accidents can cause serious harm to others on the road as well as themselves and their passengers. Further, drunk drivers face the very real possibility of serious legal consequences.
Drunk Driving Could Lead To More Than Just DUI Charges
One mother in Long Island is learning more about the full extent of the consequences a person can face after drunk driving. On April 12, 2017, the police were called to the scene of an accident involving a driver striking a parked car. During the course of the investigation, the driver became irate and struggled with the officers.
The mother was arrested for
- Aggravated driving while intoxicated (Leandra’s Law)
- Driving while intoxicated (DWI)
- Resisting arrest
- Endangering the welfare of a child
The Leandra’s Law charge and the endangering the welfare of a child charges stem from the fact that the mother had her 6-year old child with her in the car at the time of the accident. Leandra’s Law is a felony charge and could cause her to serve substantial jail time.
Apart from legal charges, having the child in the car while driving drunk could result in the removal of her child. Officers at the scene turned the child over to relatives.
The lesson here is that even the most minor legal issues can balloon out of control. If you find yourself facing criminal charges, even minor ones, you owe it to yourself to ensure your rights are protected by securing experienced DWI defense attorney.
